We also created these two stellar executive portraits of Chief Communications Officer Maggie Fitzpatrick. The second one in a slight drizzle of rain. Love taking daylight and turning it into something more dramatic. The behind the scenes shows the actual light and setting:

Society Life Magazine Cover October 2014

We shot this group portrait of Southlake, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty at a home going onto the market. Key elements in pulling it together, were, adding furniture and styling. It was empty! Creating an even broad warm light, with a sense of light coming from all directions, and giving each person their individual space. We pre-lit and styled the set up the day before, so it was ready to go early morning the next day. Smooth sailing!

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY IN SOUTHLAKE TX

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

I was in Southlake Town Square on the 3rd for their firework display. It was nothing short of spectacular. There’s no better way than to be up close, where the earth is shaking and the ashes are falling at your feet. The smell of fireworks everywhere. With each blast, I thought of our brothers and sisters that went before us and fought for our freedom. It came at a dear price. What we see as beautiful, they saw as horror. I thank all of our Armed Forces both today and in every war preceding right back to our forefathers.

Head Shots Portraits – Business & Pleasure

Who says you can’t mix business & pleasure? I’ve had many opportunities to do just that.

Teamed up with long time friend, David Felch, from way back in high school (30+ years ago…) and had the sincere pleasure of shooting an event and portraits for him and his company Coriant, at the grand opening in Coppell Texas. Along side of shooting the event, I was able to shoot some great head shot portraits of many of his colleagues. These days, there’s plenty of need for showing off pretty faces. From Facebook to Linkedin and everything between – everyone needs head shots and portraits!  If that wasn’t mixing business with pleasure, then at the end of the day, David’s beautiful 16 year daughter shows up after her ice skating practice. As you can see from the portraits below, it was a must…. I was wrapping up equipment, close to leaving, but no way I was going to let her escape! Back up went the lights….

When shooting events, I often offer head shots as a part of the package because they’re so useful these days for just about everyone that works, and even those who don’t!

A big thanks to David, pictured below.

Sports Illustrated Kids, Future Stars shoot #2

Off to a great start this year with a huge move from NYC to Dallas/FT. Worth metroplex, and two shoots for Sports Illustrated Kids, Annmarie Avila now in the bucket! This shoot of Dallas, Texas, Highland Park High School golfer Scottie Scheffler started in the wee hours of morning. Over cast and threatening rain, I added some of my own light and color to put a little nature back into the nature. A key element when shooting for this page is for the background to be clean enough for a possible cutout (his head and cap in this image). For this crop, this shot worked best. Below are a few of other ideas and favs. I’ve seen the page with different crops. So, hard to say what they’ll end up going with, thus “options, options, options!” But, I did have a good feeling that this one would work for story telling. Birdie!

The Kick from NYC to DFW

My first sports portrait photography assignment with Sports Illustrated for Kids kicked off in Argyle Texas, only a short distance from my Mother’s nesting grounds in Southlake, Tx. With a huge thanks to Photo Editor Annmarie Avila, who set me up with the shoot, after I mentioned that I was marketing my services in Texas to expand my client list, and be closer to family.

Sports Illustrated, Future Star, Football Kicker Cole Hedlund

Sports Illustrated, Future Star, Football Kicker Cole Hedlund

This shoot was of Argyle High School Football Kicker, Cole Hedlund, who’s managed to accumulate a large sum of field goals, records, championships and awards. For the money shot, we had a very small window of time, the sun was first glaring bright, then shooting down like a meteor. That’s really when all the excitement started. The colors exploded, and Cole Hedlund put the boot to the ball! My young Man can kick, and fortunately with control. I was only about a foot away from his bad-ass right foot as it came whirling by my 17-40mm lens. With a few warm up kicks, the sun relinquished its might, and darkness revealed its colorful beauty. We tweaked our lights, and Cole kicked about 25 stellar beauties.  The goal was to keep the sport portrait rich in color, but open light at the same time – balancing the lights to style, and finding that peak moment of beauty.  Cole followed direction superbly, and gave this a poetic, dance-like finish.

Great to see his Mom and dad there to support him, from bringing him to the field, to running back home and returning with a massive National trophy he won, to turning on the stadium lights.

Two Covers from Two Set-ups

PR Week September Cover is the second of two main set-ups that both turned into covers of Bonin Bough of Mondelez International.

PR Week September Cover, Mondeléz International, Bonin Bough

This editorial portrait assignment was originally shot for Hong Kong,  Campaign Asia  photo editor, Andy Martin, for interior usage only. With several set-ups including the above and the below, the shoot was promoted to cover for Campaign Asia with a nice interior spread. PR Week took notice and picked it up for September.

Both shot on location at Mondelez International, the lobby had a mural highlighting many of the brands that Bough actually covered. A little lighting to emphasize the brands and a little lighting to illuminate Bonin in a strong business portrait!

The red chair was sitting in the Mondelez very colorful and playful lobby. It was screaming to photographed, but I was hearing from it, (yes, the chair could talk) that it wanted no competition from all the other visuals, keeping all the attention to itself. It made a compromise forBonin.  The trustworthy black backdrop kept it clean and simple and helped create the studio styled effect. Perfect for a classic business cover.

The Polo Portrait on the Farm

Shooting at the Haviland Hollow Farm Polo field with Talbot Logan and his pony, Queen Machine shortly after two great, aggressive, polo matches. (I’ve included some of the choice match shots below.) Here for this commercial style portrait, Ms. Queen Machine cooperated beautifully with neither a flinch nor a blink of her eyes from the strobes. For this shoot, I had one high up elinchrom quadra with a 135mm octabank. It worked perfectly to give a nice modeling feel, and as it was a personal shoot, it was perfect for me getting on and off the field without a huge production. Never knowing when a horse might get spooked, it is best to keep a small footprint. The sky was pretty grey, but, it turned into an incredible sunset about 30 minutes later. So, with the help of PS, the two work in happy harmony.

Now for the game! Wow! What thrill. Both teams played intensely. I am new to the sport and all my preconceived ideas about the game went right out the window. The horses are powerful, fast, and can cut on a dime. The players and the horses are beyond physical, engaged in nothing short of a contact sport. Stay out of the way! What’s great about Haviland Hollow, is the beauty of the environment, as well as the very laid back feel. Sound floats across the fields like water, and the Horses hooves reverberate like thunder. Just that sound alone can get you excited when you see the horses sprinting right at you.  Out in the open the spectators were really watching the matches and they had front row easy going seats.  To get these shots, the long zoom came in handy as there’s no time to be running back and forth for positioning. Big thanks to Talbot, Sam Ramirez (the owner of the farm) and to Ms. Queen Machine.

Employee Benefit Adviser August 2012 won Regional Silver for Feature Article Design. Group Creative Director Hope Fitch-Mickiewicz, always open to pushing the limits, on one very hot summer morning, suggested shooting the business portrait in front of a huge, cool, but very busy mural. Love having the art director there on location for this sort of reason! At the time, I would have most likely walked right past it without giving even an inkling of a thought. Too busy for the business mag. I’m always looking to simplify the compositions.   My first thought was immediately about how will copy look against this background?  But, she obviously had some ideas and here’s how it turned out:Azbee 2013 Regional Silver Awards Winner: Feature Article Design

This magazine also featured a new direction with the editor’s bio portrait and 6 writers portraits that we shot in Washington DC. Here’s the online version in its entirety: Employee Benefit Adviser August 2012
